The climbing route
A beginner peak in the Ulta valley, next to the Punta Olímpica pass — departure from Huaraz at 3:00am and return around 3:00pm, with no camp and no overnight stay. Huaraz → Punta Olímpica Pass (4,700m) → Mateo Summit (5,150m) → Huaraz
Departure from Huaraz at 3:00am heading north through the Callejón de Huaylas to Carhuaz, where the road branches off through the Ulta gorge up to the Punta Olímpica pass (4,700m). From there you walk toward the glacier, put on climbing gear, and ascend to the summit (5,150m), with a panoramic view of the Cordillera Blanca. After enjoying the view and resting, you descend to the point where the car waits and return to Huaraz, arriving around 3:00pm. Clients must bring their own breakfast/snacks and lunch (an option to stop along the way is available).
Return: descend by the same route to the point where the vehicle waits near the Punta Olímpica pass, and return directly to Huaraz — all within the same day, with no intermediate camp.
